?One of Russells main philosophical views is the importance of asking unanswerable questions in order to make us aware of their importance and to keep alive that speculative interest in the universe (Bertrand Russell: The Value of Philosophy Part 1/3). This is something that I value very highly as I find that it is one of the best ways to learn and have deep discussions. This concept also brought a certain video game to mind called? The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe.
? ? This game is endless and proposes a variety of questions, choices, and paths to take. The game encourages you to question your surroundings and what is being asked of you in order to discover more and broaden your horizons. There are also instances in the game that offer questionable choices where you must ask yourself a variety of questions and make a decision. However, this game has no true answers. On the Stanley Parables website, they describe the game by saying, the game will end, the game will never end (The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe). The narrator will still participate throughout the game, no matter the choices you make, and constantly challenges you on why you chose this path, what you think you’re gaining, and what is important to you.
? ? On another hand, you could also compare the thought process while playing this game to Rands three philosophical questions of where am I? How do I know this? And what should I do? (Ayn Rand Philosophy Who Needs It? Part 1/3). When I think about Rands tale of the astronaut who crashes on an unknown planet, I think of how he chose to not consider these three questions and instead followed what seemed familiar (the figures that seemingly looked human) and how he wound up never being heard from again (Rand,?Philosophy: Why it Matters).
? ? The Stanley Parable drops you off in a barren office, devoid of other people, and without much direction aside from what the narrator tells you to do. It makes the player question why they are in this room, why nobody is there, and what should they do. If you are not open to facing Rands philosophical questions, you may find yourself doing what the astronaut in her story does and follow the simple and familiar path which is what the narrator instructs you to do (leading you into a continuous circle of the same story). This is a great example of Rands belief that one could experience a surrender of autonomy because they do not understand, or take the time to understand, the reality they are existing in (Ayn Rand Philosophy Who Needs It? Part 2/3).
? ? Overall, both Rand and Russells views are portrayed throughout this game depending on a persons view of it and the circumstances one is put into. The Stanley Parable is a great example of one having to face unanswerable questions and also having to question their reality in order to further understand it.
